My name is Adam Farabee and I am a current student at Trinidad State Junior College pursuing an Associates of Applied Sciences degree in Gunsmithing.Currently I am studying Machine Shop, Firearms Metal Finishing, Custom Rifle Making with a specialization in military sporter conversion for Mauser 98s, and Custom Pistol smithing with a specialization in 1911 style frames. This is my project for my Custom Pistol smithing Class: a brand new Rock Island 1911 GI. Of course the first thing we do is take everything apart and beat on it with a hammer. When finished this will be a sweet shooting little pistol. Customization includes: tightening frame to slide fit, tightening barrel to slide, tightening barrel to frame (including new linkage), custom fitting a match grade bushing, installing new beaver tail, installing new slide stop, installing new trigger and fire control group (including a trigger job and safety fit), installing new sights, lighten magazine release button, and complete metal refinish.

This pistol was my first project at TSJC. It is the Traditions Trapper Pistol Kit, in .50 cal black powder percussion cap. A neat piece of history, this kit let us students learn filing, sanding, polishing, and other basic bench metal skills that we would need to continue in the gunsmithing program. I decided to go with a less than tradition finish on the piece.
